Doublets of this kind have been worn since the Tudor era, at the time of the Spanish Armada, throughout the War of the Spanish Succession, and during the Pirate era. The garment protected the body from cold weather whilst permitting full freedom of movement in the arms, making it particularly well suited to labourers and sailors.
